In 2005 Wimbledon High established four houses for girls in the Senior School. They were named after four of the first twelve girls who started at the school in 1880 - Hastings, Scott, Arnold and Meredith.
Mildred Hastings
The younger sister of WHS Headmistress Edith Hastings, she was born on 12 July 1866 and moved to Wimbledon from Yorkshire. She was previously a student at Nottingham High School. She is the only one of the first twelve to feature in an existing school photograph of the first Sixth Form. After school she trained as a secretary and worked at the Norland Institute in Kensington for most of her career.Violet Scott-Moncrieff
Violet was born in March 1868 and was the daughter of Sir Colin Scott-Moncrieff, a former General and Engineer. Violet lived in India where her father was working and then Oxford where she attended Oxford High School. The opening of Wimbledon High School prompted the family to return to the area and remained right up to present day with Violet's great granddaughter also attending Wimbledon High School.May and Margaret Arnold
Sisters May and Margaret were 3 years apart and lived originally at the first house on Thornton Hill. Their grandfather, the Reverend Dr Thomas Kerchever Arnold, had been a renowned classicist and theologian. After leaving Wimbledon High School, Margaret went to France to learn French and both sisters were talented artistically. They remained active members of the Wimbledon High School Union for many years.Sophie Meredith
Sophie Isabel Meredith was born on 22 January 1869 in Brixton and was in the first lesson on the very first day. Her father was a journalist from Dublin. She was one of six children and lived in Bedfordshire with her sister Gertrude and her uncle who was a vicar and her six cousins.
