A code of conduct exists for the smooth-running of the school and there is an expectation of everyone to behave in a polite and considerate manner. Students are expected to mature into responsible individuals who have a clear respect for others and their property. Courtesy and good manners are a feature of WHS and high standards of behaviour are expected from students at all times, whether in or out of school. House points are awarded under our positive behaviour strategy. Bullying, whether verbal or physical is not tolerated.

The following rules are determined by Health and Safety, and security issues:

ATTENDANCE

  • Students must always register when they are on the school premises, usually with their tutor, at the beginning of the day and the beginning of the afternoon session. In the morning they must be in their form rooms for registration at 8:30am (Mondays): 8:40am (All other days).
  • If a student is absent through illness, a note from her parents/ guardian, giving the reasons for her absence, must be sent to the school on her return. A medical certificate is needed for two weeks’ absence or more. Notes should be addressed to the form tutor.
  • Students must always seek permission to be absent well in advance if they wish to miss school for any reason. This is in accordance with the regulations of the Department for Education and the GDST. Absence for which no prior permission has been given will be noted as ‘unauthorised’ and appear on the student record as the equivalent of truancy.
  • If a student cannot participate in PE lessons for medical reasons, she must bring a note from parents.

SAFETY AND SECURITY

Students must always adhere to all regulations made for Health and Safety purposes: e.g. with regard to fire exits, fire drills and emergency evacuation procedures. In laboratories, workshops, in any sporting activity where equipmentis involved, or wherever any electrical equipment may be used, the rules set by the staff about clothing, hair, behaviour and movement must be followed.

DRESS AND BEHAVIOUR CODE

Courtesy: students wearing the WHS uniform are easily identified by adults and are always considered as representatives of the school. We expect, therefore, that students will be considerate and courteous in the streets, waiting for buses or trains, or getting out of a car if given a lift to school. We expect students to move sensibly in the school grounds and within the buildings. Those working in the library during study periods are expected to be in complete silence; those using the library at other times are asked to be as quiet as possible.

Dress: Wimbledon High School expects Senior School girls to take a pride in their appearance, as befits a professional environment. The School also believes that a young person in our community may take steps to change how they dress or the uniform they wear to reflect their self-identified gender , cultural or religious background.

The School also believes in the balance between individual identity and the support and safety found in uniformity: to ensure choices of appearance surround individual needs, rather than reflecting extrinsic motive. It, accordingly, asks Senior School girls to adhere to the Uniform Policy as shown below, and will pick up any extremes of appearance that are deemed to be out of sync with the community’s values. Heads of Year and form tutors will lead on ensuring all students look smart and follow the Uniform Policy.

From the start of the Summer Term in Year 11, students do not wear uniform but are expected to observe the Sixth Form dress code.

No smoking / vaping: The school has a No Smoking and No Vaping policy and all students are expected to adhere to this, both in school and out of it, when they are clearly recognised as members of Wimbledon High School. Students seen smoking in the immediate area of the school will be disciplined.
