This week we hear from four of our Sport Scholars who talk about their experiences of Sport at WHS - we hear from Issy B in Year 7, Jessica D in Year 9 and Kate M and Emma A in Year 11.

What has been the highlight of Year 7/9/11 Sport so far?

KATE M

For me, the highlight of Year 11 curriculum sport so far was the multisports house sporting challenge. My team, Scott, displayed amazing team spirit and we won many of the sports challenges. The level of commitment and competitiveness in our team grew alongside our success in the sporting challenges (and the singing competition!). Sadly, our inability to locate hidden sports teachers and chocolate bars let us down in the final weeks, but we were very proud of our second place overall.

JESSICA D

My highlights so far were definitely the Elite Scholars’ day and the day at the S&C gym, as both events were fun yet challenging and really tested your strengths and weaknesses. You were then able to learn from that and then practice, train, and proceed to perform at a higher standard.

EMMA A

My favourite part of year 11 sport so far is definitely seeing our hockey team jell together. The coach rides always light up my day. We are always adding new songs to our warm-up playlist and belting out the lyrics to Taylor Swift on the drives to the matches. There have been many occasions where Mr Price has found himself suggesting a song and leading us all in a team karaoke bonding session.

ISSY B

I really like playing matches with all my teammates both in hockey and netball.

What have you learnt the most from sport at WHS?

KATE M

I've learnt that the most important thing in sport is to never give up. You can't always be performing at your top level - sometimes injury or other issues get in the way. But finding a sport that you really enjoy and staying fit has a huge impact on how you feel, both mentally and physically. In the long run, results come from perseverance and striving for incremental improvements. I've also learnt how much I enjoy being part of a team, and spending time with others across different year groups who share the same enthusiasm for my sports.

JESSICA D

Sport at WHS has really helped me learn things such as leadership, accountability, teamwork, resilience, patience and respect as a team player. I have also found a sense of accomplishment through doing sports, individual and through team dynamics such as with a school team.

EMMA A

I have learnt a lot from the many interesting sports scholar talks we have had. All the ones I have been able to attend have been extremely informative in many aspects. Not only do they provide you with useful, factual information about how to perform at your best level, but many of the stories the athletes tell are motivating and inspire me to persevere through an injury for example or not to feel down after a bad training session.

ISSY B

Teamwork makes the dreamwork!
